Build a Better RV Campfire Without the Smoke, Sparks, or Drama
7/1/2026
A campfire is one of the best parts of RV camping, but safety, campground rules, and local fire restrictions should always come first. Before building a fire, RVers should check burn bans, campground policies, public land regulations, weather conditions, and whether fires must remain in designated fire rings. Using local firewood helps prevent the spread of invasive insects and tree diseases while supporting campground regulations.
To build a safe campfire, start with tinder and kindling, add dry firewood gradually, and keep flames manageable. Campfires should be positioned away from RVs, awnings, outdoor rugs, dry vegetation, and neighboring campsites. When finished, completely extinguish the fire by soaking, stirring, and cooling all embers before leaving the campsite or going to bed.
For areas with fire restrictions, propane fire pits, lanterns, and other low-risk alternatives may provide a similar camping atmosphere while complying with local regulations. Following proper campfire safety practices helps create an enjoyable RV camping experience while protecting campers, campgrounds, and natural resources.
